I used to have a 1981 Civic, and it was fun... in a super slow kind of way. The front suspension in the first and second gen Civic is weird in that the sway bar is used to locate the lower control arm in the fore-aft direction. That makes them do funny things when you flex the bar a lot, like dumping it in to a hard sweeper. It all happens pretty slowly, so there’s no danger, but it’s definitely a different feeling from the super composed later generations. A friend of mine had a first gen Rabbit (not a GTi) and he thought the cars felt similar, though I thought the Rabbit was a little crisper in the transient stuff.
Buy a 1st or 2nd gen Civic and drive it for a while! They’re dirt cheap out West. Expect to have a fair amount of trouble finding parts, so make sure the carb in particular doesn’t need to be replaced. Marvel at the CVCC!
